Description

Nauseating stench coming from the direction of this facility in Mecca, CA. Residents of Mecca have been suffering from nausea, stomach cramps, headaches which is believed to be related to the odors. Facility odors are affecting children and staff at Saul Martinez Elementary School approximately 1-2 miles away.

    Daniel from USDA mentioned that communities are eligible for "colonia designation." Communities are also eligible for "Border 2012" funding but need to apply.

    SCAQMD will have results from monitoring data collected at the facility within the next few weeks.

    Douglas McDaniel, US EPA, is examining whether any Federal violations are occurring at the site. Please contact him with questions (415) 947-4106.

    Western Environmental has removed a problematic wastewater pond in order to alleviate some odors. The facility has also committed to stopping their soy whey pond practices.

    Need to determine the nature of the materials being accepted by the facility. Some loads may be haz mat, construction debris/demolition debris.

    DTSC has manifest documents on file. Follow-up to be completed within 30 days.

    All odor complaints should be submitted to South Coast Air Quality Management District. Odor complaints can also be entered and tracked on IVAN.
