Description:
There's a stench of manure and sometimes petroleum coming from the soil-recycling plant called Western Environmental, Inc. It is centrally located off Hwy 86 near Mecca, and so it can be seen from almost every housing development in the community. Residents from different parts of Mecca have reported the nauseating smell, including students and teachers in the community. Many of them have reported nausea, stomach cramps, headaches and disgust. Some of the most affected people have been farm workers who have had to work across the street despite the reek, children at the Migrant Headstart Center, residents from Chapultepec Apartments, Paseo de los Heroes II, Villas Oscar Romero all of them just behind the plant and most of them low income housing.
